The History of the Peabody, Kansas POW Camp
Presentrd by Marcia Sebree
November 3 at the Centre Point Church, Whitewater
Marcia Sebree, President of the Peabody Historical Society will share information and events of the POW Camp in Peabody. The POW Camp #101 was opened as a tent camp south of Peabody in Sept 1943. The prisoners that would arrive were captured in Africa and were part of Rommel’s Brigade. There was a great need for farm workers and were welcomed by many. All were not happy with this developement. The camp was scheduled to emd but the Peabody group applied for extended time. It was to cold to leave the camp out in tents so a new place would need bo be approved. The Eyestone building in Peabody would fit the bill. The POW camp would remain until December of 1945. This was longer than most. There are many events and stories to share.
